Legendary sports broadcaster Keith Jackson - whose iconic voice was synonymous for decades with great college football and its greatest plays - died Friday night at 89.
Jackson's voice often emulated the energy of a particular event or the momentum of a game-changing play. But he also became widely known for coining popular sports phrases, including referring to the Rose Bowl as "The Grandaddy of Them All" and calling Michigan Stadium "The Big House."
One of his most famous lines was exclaiming, "Whoa, Nellie!" And a few years ago, he explained to FOX Sports how that phrase came from his great-grandfather.
He said:
"Whoa, Nellie came from m great-grandpa. He was a farmer, he was a whistler. One of these guys, he was always working, always busy. … And then he would do something - drop something or whatever - and often times, you'd hear him say, 'Whoa, Nellie! Whoaaaaa, Nellie!' That kind of stuff, and it kind of stuck to the little scruffy kid following him around."
Jackson paved the way for and influenced many in the sports world, and they reacted to his death with thank yous and clips of some of his most famous calls and on-air moments.
